Football: Sierra Canyon crushes Chaminade 44-6; finishes regular season unbeaten


Sierra Canyon finishes regular season 10-0

The Sierra Canyon football team finished its regular season unbeaten for the third time in school history with a 44-6 Mission League victory against Chaminade.

The past two times in 2016 and 2011, the Trailblazers went on to capture Southern Section and state championships.

It will be a tad harder this time as the Trailblazers will compete in the Division 1 playoffs for the first time in school history.

“We can’t wait to get going and get started,” Sierra Canyon coach Jon Ellinghouse said. “Division 1 is where we want to be at compete at the highest level.”

Wyatt Becker, a junior transfer from Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks, completed 9 of 15 passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns. Becker connected with Cole Crawford, Xavier Jordan and Kwazi Gilmer for scoring plays of one, 14 and 84 yards, respectively.

Terrell “Choppa” Cooks rushe dfor 79 yards on nine carries, including a 14-yard touchdown.

Freshman Jaxsen Stokes got in on the action with a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and a 3-yard rushing score. Stokes made his mark on senior night

Gilmer caught three passes for 111 yards.

The lone bright spot for Chaminade (5-5, 2-3) was kicker Ryon Sayeri. Sayeri made field goals of 40 and 46 yards. He narrowly missed a 54-yard attempt as the ball hit the crossbar and stayed out.

Seth Shigg completed 14 of 25 passes for 147 yards and gained 65 yards on 13 carries.

Sierra Canyon now turns its attention to the playoffs and is expected to be seeded No. 3 behind juggernauts St. John Bosco and Mater Dei.
