The Sierra Canyon girls tennis team is lucky to have Lyric Wilson and Betty Chen.

The Trailblazers won their seventh consecutive match and took the Sunshine League championship after an 11-7 victory against Louisville.

Sierra Canyon went 7-1 in league play, the only blemish a 10-8 setback against Marymount weeks ago.

A lot of the success can be attributed to singles players Wilson and Chen.

Wilson has had a season to remember with 34 consecutive victories. Wilson was 31-1 last year, the best season in school history until this yea. A two-year record of 65-1 for one of the top 10th-graders in Southern California.

Wilson was dominant Thursday winning 6-1 in dominating fashion against the only girl to knock her off last year. Wilson will be the No. 1 ranked player from the league for all postseason and end-of-year tournaments.

Chen, battling injuries all year, went 32-4 and showed up match after match to help the Trailblazers secure its second league championship in a row. Chen’s toughness down the stretch was instrumental in Sierra Canyon winning its last seven matches in a huge second half surge. Chen is a high-level juniors player in the USTA and trains with Wilson at TMX in Burbank.

Wilson and Chen have done a tremendous job leading by example and leading the young team laying down a foundation for future success.

Despite all the individual singles success, Wilson and Chen have decided to put their personal singles goals aside and team up to try and win a league and Southern Section championship.

The journey starts Monday at Weddington Golf and Tennis.
