Sierra Canyon girls tennis is just getting started

The Sierra Canyon girls tennis team kicked off its regular season Thursday with a long trip to Upland and came away with a close victory.

The Trailblazers and Highlanders tied 9-9 in sets won but Sierra Canyon prevailed by a 78-71 margin in games won.

Betty Chen was phenomenal winning all three of her singles matches and not dropping game, going 18-0.

“She’s our veteran leader,” Sierra Canyon coach Carlo Bertumen said. “We know what to expect from Betty.”

Danica Quinn won two singles sets and the doubles team of Ally Thau and Sienna Martin won two sets. Thau and Martin’s close tiebreak win in one of the sets proved vital to send the match to games won to provide an overall win for the team.

“Everyone fought hard, kept it close and contributed to this victory,” Bertumen said.

A match against Chaminade earlier this week was cancelled due to heat. The Trailblazers knocked off Oakwood on games 79-72 after another 9-9 tie in sets played in a scrimmage back on Aug. 25th.

Sierra Canyon is next in action next week against Flintridge Prep and Garces Memorial of Bakersfield. Both matches will be at CSUN (corner of Lindley and Plummer).
