Led by freshman quarterback Chayden Peery, the Sierra Canyon Trailblazers (2-1) shut out the Grace Brethren Lancers (2-1), 35-0 Friday night at Moorpark College’s Griffin Stadium.  The defense dominated, a young quarterback stepped up, and the running backs punished the Lancers in the win.

As the game began, the size of the Lancers defensive linemen was impressive.  They started well, sacking Sierra Canyon’s starting quarterback, Johnny Hawkins, two times on the first drive of the game.

Coach Jon Ellinghouse made a quick switch at quarterback to freshman Chayden Peery on the next drive and the offense started to gain momentum.

“We had to adjust to their speed,” said Coach Ellinghouse.  “They had a heck of a defensive front.”

After being called in for Sierra Canyon’s second drive of the game, Peery looked ready to play and took control of the offense and the game. He completed 10 of 15 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown.

“I was a little bit nervous” said Peery, “I knew I was well prepared since I have been watching film and splitting reps with Johnny.”

Coach Ellinghouse seemed pleased with the way the team played Friday night and very happy about the momentum change that came from putting Peery in at quarterback.

“Johnny and Chayden were competing all week and all season,” ” said Coach Ellinghouse. “We were looking for a momentum change and Chayden captured that and did a great job.”

Sierra Canyon’s first points of the game came from the defense off of a botched lateral pass by the Lancers that resulted in a fumble recovery by Daniel Kamulali who ran the ball back six yards for the game’s first touchdown.  Kamulali recorded his second turnover late in the second half when he intercepted a pass from Brethren’s quarterback Michael Zele, putting the game away for the Trailblazers.

The Sierra Canyon defensive line also played well against a much larger offensive line fielded by the Lancers.  Noah McGregor was in the Lancers’ backfield all night recording 1.5 sacks and two tackles for losses.

Chris Cannon also added two sacks during the game and threw the Lancer’s quarterback down to the turf on big sacks in the second and fourth quarters.

Corey Jones had another magical night for the offense and had a big week personally, receiving his first Division 1 offer from UCLA. “It was surreal” said Jones, “I still can’t believe that I got my first offer.”

He looked worthy of that offer catching a key 45-yard pass from Peery in the first half and rushing for a 54-yard touchdown, where his amazing speed was on display.

The players were indeed ready to play and the coaches did their jobs as the Trailblazers executed an impressive game plan on both sides of the ball against a physically imposing opponent.

SC Bounces Back with Big Win

On a blazing-hot Friday night in Granada Hills, the Sierra Canyon Trailblazers (1-1) hammered the Buena Bulldogs (0-2) 42-15, to even their record at 1-1. The victory was a nice bounce-back win for Sierra Canyon after suffering a tough 25-7 loss to the Westlake Warriors in their first game of the season.

Even though this was the Trailblazer’s first win of the season, the truly special part of the night belonged to brothers JJ and JD Hernandez. Each of them scored a TD to honor their brother Kaizer.

JJ Hernandez, a junior, is one of the Trailblazers’ top receivers and JD Hernandez, a sophomore, is a part of the rotation at running back and one of the premiere linebackers in the region. JJ caught a 56 yard touchdown pass and JD rushed for a two yard touchdown in the victory over the Bulldogs.

Together, the Hernandez brothers had more than a win to play for. They wanted to honor their brother Kaizer, a Sierra Canyon alum who also played for the Trailblazers, who is very sick and in the hospital.

“I dedicated every play today to him,” said JD. “Especially my touchdown, my touchdown was something special.”

“Our bond is something amazing,” added JJ showing how close they are as brothers, “It is something that will never be broken.”

It was clear from their excitement after the game that they were proud that they had played so well for the team and their brother, who was always on their minds.

The Trailblazers offense started to click with several big plays and they cut down their turnovers from seven last week to committing just one against the Bulldogs.

“The team went back to basics and physical play,” said Coach Jon Ellinghouse. “We found some kids that really stepped-up and became leaders.”

The Trailblazers indeed looked more in-sync as Corey Jones caught two passes for thirty-plus yards from quarterback Johnny Hawkins and also added two rushing touchdowns to cap his amazing evening.

The Trailblazers’ offense heated up, just like the turf at kick-off at Granada Hills Charter High School. However, it was the bond of the Hernandez brothers that made the victory so sweet. Get well, Kaizer!

Offensive Stars of the Game: Johnny Hawkins, QB Jr. #15 (9-13, 172 YDS, 1 TD); Chayden Peery, QB Fr. #8 (6-7, 76 YDS, 1 TD (rush)); JJ Hernandez, WR Jr. #3 (6 catches for 120 YDS and 1 TD, 25 YDS rushing); Corey Jones, RB Jr. #5 (3 catches for 83 YDS, 22 YDS rushing for 2 TDs); and Hunter Williams, RB So. #21 (16 carries for 114 YDS).

Defensive Stars of the Game: Chris Cannon, DL Sr. #52 (recorded a sack and recovered a fumble) and Josh Roca, DL Jr. #57 (recovered a fumble).

Softball loses heartbreaker 3-2 in CIF Finals

For the last four years, the Sierra Canyon has taken major steps in establishing itself as a softball powerhouse.  After a disappointing 3-2 loss to St. Anthony’s in the CIF Finals, it will take at least one more year to complete the complete evolution.  From winning just eight games four years ago, the Trailblazers have gone from the quarterfinals, to the semi-finals and then the finals in just three years.
