The Sierra Canyon girls basketball team is gearing up for another deep playoff run and is 16-3 overall to this point. The Trailblazers only three losses are to DeSoto (Texas) and two excruciating one-point setbacks against La Jolla Country Day and Mater Dei. DeSoto is the No. 3 ranked team in the country, No. 1 in Texas and 22-2 overall.

No bad losses.

The road to a Gold Coast League championship begins this week with a home game against Will Burr’s Viewpoint Patriots.

Sierra Canyon has six league games coming and two nonleague games left on the schedule, including a showdown Saturday at Long Beach Poly.

The much-anticipated Windward game is Wed., Jan. 22

Leading the way thus far has been Duke-bound Vanessa de Jesus, Texas-bound Ashley Chevalier, Boise St.-bound Alexis Mark and Rose Odebunmi.

A pleasant surprise has been Hueneme-transfer Vanessa Smart, a 3-point sharpshooter markswoman. Smart has been able to knock down the 3-ball and open up the rest of the floor.

Last year, Sierra Canyon finished 33-1 and won the Open Div. state championship. The girls are hoping for a repeat.
